St. Cloud State University
Located along the Mississippi River in St. Cloud, St. Cloud State University was founded in 1869 and has become the largest member of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System and the second largest university in Minnesota. The College of Education is committed to the preparation of high-quality teachers, administrators, counselors, and other school and community professionals. They serve as the largest producer of teachers in Minnesota.

Creating an environment where people enjoy learning is a top priority for St. Cloud State University’s College of Education Dean, Kate Steffens. “The research is pretty clear on what a difference the environment makes on how we learn,” says Steffens. “If people are in a bright, inviting environment, it affects the way they work and treat others.
Making their space more inviting and less institutional was the goal when Marco helped Steffens redesign her office, conference areas, Center for Doctoral Studies, and the Curriculum Technology Center at SCSU’s College of Education. Steffens has worked with Vince Mohs, Marco Workplace Interiors Sales Manager, on multiple projects over the last several years. Because they have such a large space, they update areas in phases. |

| Steffens was confident Mohs could help create the type of environment she had envisioned for the college. “Vince is so easy to work with,” explained Steffens. “I need a vendor who listens and is focused on our needs as an institution. Marco is sensitive to our needs and really listens. I don’t worry about the outcome of our efforts because Vince takes care of us.” |

| The Solution |
| In the Curriculum Technology Center, small conversation areas were designed for reading, working, and interacting with others. Storage cabinets with shelving were custom-built to organize and store their many books and other resource materials. Steffens’ office was furnished with a Steelcase Context desk and conference table, a Steelcase Sensor office chair, and Steelcase side chairs. All wood furnishings are finished in a light maple and accented with vibrant colored chair fabrics to create a warm, inviting look and feel. Platinum finished bookcases and storage cabinets nicely compliment the wood desk and table in Steffens’ office. “Working with concrete walls can be a little challenging,” says Steffens. “Our new furnishings really warm up the space.” |

Steffens felt the installation process of their new furnishings went very well. She explained, “It was just wonderful. If they say they’ll be here on a specific day, they are here that day so we can plan accordingly. They are always courteous and respectful of the work we have to do around them. If we need a minor adjustment made, they come back and take care of it for us.”
Steffens comments, “I’m very pleased with the quality, communication, follow-up, and our relationship with Marco. That’s what I value most — the relationship. One that lasts over time. I’m a strong believer in Marco’s values. It feels like we’re in it together. If we need to make a change, Marco gets it done for us - we do it together.” |
